Hey Eagles addicts, I put together a list of who I believe to be is each team’s most important defender.

For our beloved Eagles, that player is none other than our new middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans.

Here’s how I came to that conclusion:

For a team that’s loaded with Pro Bowlers on the defensive side of the ball, it may seem premature to label an incoming middle linebacker as its most important player.

However, if anyone watched the Philadelphia Eagles during the first half of last season, they’d notice a gaping hole in the middle of their defense.

The Eagles spent 2011 integrating Jim Washburn’s wide-nine scheme. And although it resulted in 50 sacks, the run defense definitely took a hit.

Ryans will start the season as the quarterback of the unit and will be expected to stop opposing running backs once they get past the front four.

If he can return to his old Pro Bowl form, expect the Philly defense to dramatically improve in all facets.

  1. Even though he’s a newcomer, I can’t disagree Jasen. If we’re talking about what defender will make the biggest difference for us this year, it has to be Ryans. That’s why he was brought in, to plug the middle and lead the D.

Other players like Kendricks, Allen, Asomugha, Cole, etc, will all be important, but Ryans has to make a difference.

No doubt about it. We have a bunch of Pro-Bowl talent on the defense, mixed in with veteran leadership and youthful talent, but our Super Bowl chances hinge on Ryans’ ability to transition back into a 4-3 defense and put his injury concerns behind him.
