Eagles Could Still Sign UDFA Keionta Davis | Eagles Addict

With the Eagles’ rookie min-camp about to kickoff this weekend, it’s somewhat odd that the team has yet to announce their UDFA signings. I suppose there could be various reasons for that, but one reason could be that they’re not done adding to the list.

If that’s the case, Chattanooga DE Keionta Davis is an interesting name to keep an eye on.

Davis was projected by many draft analysts to be selected anywhere between the third and fifth rounds.  Apparently, it wasn’t known to the media until after the draft that a bulging disc in his neck is the reason he went undrafted.

That, as you might imagine, is a significant injury and one that could ultimately kill his dream of playing in the NFL.  However, he could also make a full recovery and go on to fulfilling that dream to the best of his ability.

The only morsel of news I could find regarding Davis’ situation is that he is due to see his specialist in June, and said specialist believes that his disc will fully heal “sooner rather than later.”

To further support Davis’ specialist’s belief, here is an article that discusses a study done by “Spine” that analyzed NFL players who underwent surgery for disc herniations in the cervical spine.

The majority of U.S. National Football League (NFL) players who undergo surgery for a herniated disc in the upper (cervical) spine are able to resume their careers and perform at a high level, suggests a study in Spine, published by Wolters Kluwer.

I don’t believe Davis has actually undergone surgery for his bulging disc, but even if that was a worst-case-scenario it wouldn’t appear to be the end of the world.  At the least, it would be worth the risk of signing him to a UDFA contract and hope for the best.

So, if we’re to believe that Davis will eventually be cleared medically, you can read NFL.com’s scouting report on him right here and then here are some random notes about him prior to the draft…

Optimum Scouting had him as their 46th ranked overall prospect back in January.

Quote from Eric Galko of Optimum Scouting

Said Galko: “My favorite small school defender, Davis is not only athletic away from his frame and converts speed to power very well, but he has developed rush moves as a bull rusher, offering inside moves, and finishing to rip and bend moves on the perimeter. He flashed against Alabama (in a November game), especially early on. That all but secured himself as a top-100 pick. He’s one of the most talented edge players in the 2017 NFL Draft, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he emerges as in contention to be the top small-schooler drafted.”

Quote from Lance Zierlein:

“Davis plays with solid strength at the point of attack and a hunger that drives him through the whistle.”

Tommy Lawlor had Davis mocked to the Eagles in Round 5 in his final mock draft.  Here’s what he said:

Davis would make a lot of sense. He did play for an FCS school, but was dominant, piling up 24 sacks over the past two years. One of Davis’ best games came against Alabama. He showed he could handle big-boy competition. That game helped him get an invitation to the Senior Bowl and the 6-3, 271-pound Davis had a solid showing in Mobile, Alabama. Davis followed that up with an excellent Pro Day workout. He has passed every test.

Davis can fly off the edge and also is a good power rusher. He has 34-inch arms and did 30 reps in the bench press, showing the kind of upper-body strength you want in a defensive lineman. Davis would be a good fit in the Eagles Wide 9 front. He is a small-school player with big-time talent.

Davis is already said to have received some offers from NFL teams but it’s believed he is waiting to see his neck specialist in June before signing with anyone.

The Eagles met with him at the Senior Bowl and ran his drills at his Pro Day where it was observed that it seemed they were paying special attention to him.  He’s a player I’m sure the Eagles would be interested in and I’d say it’s a safe bet that they’re one of the teams vying for him.

They’ll certainly have competition for his services if and when Davis is medically cleared.
