Ready to see who the Philadelphia Eagles won’t take the 2014 NFL Draft? I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of multiple draft sites and their predictions on who the Birds will take in the upcoming lottery.
Oh, and the reason I say these are players they won’t take is three-fold:
1. Mock drafts at this point are almost always wrong as far as what players will actually be selected in the first round, much less nailing a specific player to a specific team.
2. Free agency hasn’t happened so needs and draft boards will change.
3. This is also pre-combine where players can rise or fall a little bit.
But anyway, let’s take a look at what others think the Eagles may do…
CBSSports (NFLDraftScout) has both Rob Rang and Dane Brugler predicting the Eagles taking Louisville safety Calvin Pryor in Round 1.
WalterFootball.com – 4-round mock
1. DE/OLB Kony Ealy (Missouri)
2. S Ed Reynolds (Stanford)
3. S Deone Bucannon (Washington State)
4. CB Terrance Mitchell (Oregon)
Sports Illustrated (Doug Farrar) has Eagles taking CB Jason Verrett (TCU)
Mel Kiper’s latest mock has the Eagles taking WR Odell Beckham (LSU)
Todd McShay has the Eagles taking CB Darqueze Dennard (Michigan State)
SBNation’s Mocking the Draft – 3-Rounds
1. CB Darqueze Dennard (Michigan State)
2. S Deone Bucannon (Washington State)
3. WR/RB De’Anthony Thomas (Oregon)
Peter Schrager of Fox Sports has the Eagles taking S Calvin Pryor (Louisville)
Drafttek.com – Computer simulated 7-round draft based on an “analyst” who supplies team needs – (I think there must be a glitch in their software after seeing two WR’s in first three rounds)
1. WR Allen Robinson (Penn State)
2. CB Kyle Fuller (Virginia Tech)
3. WR Bruce Ellington (South Carolina)
4. QB Tajh Boyd (Clemson)
5. DE Tim Jackson (North Carolina)
5. OG Brandon Linder (Miami)
7. S Alden Darby (San Diego State)
DraftKing.com has the Eagles taking WR Marqise Lee (USC)
NFL Draft Geek has the Eagles taking S Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix (Alabama) in Round 1 and OLB Kyle Van Noy (BYU) in Round 2.
Football’s Future has the Eagles taking S Calvin Pryor
Ourlads.com has the Eagles taking S Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix
NFLDraftCountdown.com has the Eagles taking CB Justin Gilbert (Oklahoma State)
NFL.com has four analysts with a one-round mock. Two have the Eagles taking S Calvin Pryor and the other two have them taking CB Darqueze Dennard.
That’s 14 draft sites with a total of 18 individuals making predictions. As you can see, safety, corner and wide receiver are the predominant positions that mock drafters foresee for the Eagles.
Calvin Pryor is the winner with six people predicting him followed by Darqueze Dennard with four. Therefore, don’t expect the Eagles to draft either one of them!
At this point, it’s hard not to mock a safety to the Eagles, it’s their biggest need. However, I don’t quite get all the cornerback predictions. Sure, the Eagles could use depth there but I think Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher will both be back and starting in 2014.
I’m surprised by the lack of OLB predictions because that is their second biggest need. But, that could have more to do with where the Eagles are picking in Round 1. Right now there may not be good value at that position at that spot, though that could change over the next 2-3 months
As far as the Eagles taking a wide receiver in Round 1, I can see that only if Jeremy Maclin doesn’t return. Even if they re-sign Riley Cooper (but not Maclin), I can still see that. If Maclin re-signs, I think the WR position comes off their first round board unless someone like Mike Evans is amazingly there.
As far as the above predictions in general, I can’t decide if I like NFL Draft Geek’s two picks or SBNation’s three picks the best. At this point, I’d be happy with either.
