The Philadelphia Eagles have placed the franchise tag on wide receiver DeSean Jackson, according to Dave Spadaro of PhiladelphiaEagles.com.

Howie Roseman has stated the following in regards to the move:

“We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that.  We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”

This move comes as expected and is a no-brainer since the Eagles cannot afford to just let him walk away for nothing.

Whether or not Jackson remains with the team for 2012 is another question.  There has been, and will continue to be, much speculation about a possible “tag and trade” scenario here despite what Roseman just stated.

The worst thing that could come out of this is if Jackson ends up playing on a one-year franchise tag deal (even though he’ll get paid a nice salary of $9.4 million).  For my detailed reasoning on that, you can read that here.

However, this situation is far from over.  The two side will continue to negotiate a long-term deal but if no accord can be struck, we could very well see Jackson traded to the highest bidder.

This will be the Eagles’ 2012 soap opera story of the offseason.  Should be interesting to watch!
