The 2nd day of the draft was devoted to the defensive backfield. In somewhat of another surprise pick the Eagles selected Temple Safety Jaiquawn Jarrett in the 2nd round. Then after trading down with the Ravens, the Eagles picked up Utah St. cornerback Curtis Marsh and a 6th round pick in the process.
Jarrett, 6′ 198 lbs, was a 4 year starter for the Owls. Many draft pundits had him ranked as a 3rd – 4th round prospect but he was also viewed as a good player. The guy is a hitter and Reid stated as much by saying “he’s the most intimidating hitter in the draft”. I’m sure he embellished a little bit there but yeah, he seems to enjoy contact.
Jarrett didn’t post a good 40 time at the draft (4.62) but Reid countered that by saying “remember, Dawk ran a 4.60, 4.65 coming out”. Reid trying to endear fans to Jarrett by comparing him to a player Eagle fans are passionate about, nice going big guy!
Marsh, 6′ 1″ 197 lbs, has only been a cornerback for 2 years. He started his career as a running back for Utah St and converted to CB in his junior year. He is seen as a good athlete with a lot of talent and the potential to be a very good starter in the NFL once he learns the nuances of the corner position.
Reid stated that “he is not a project” but at the same time noted that “with our coaching he will be a future starter” (quote may not be exact but it was something to that effect). So, he’s not a project but will need good coaching to eventually be a starter. Semi-project I guess?
The drafting of Jarrett all but confirms we’re not bringing back Quintin Mikell. I knew we’d take a safety in this draft I just didn’t think we’d take one in the 2nd round. But, I’ll certainly welcome a guy in the secondary that enjoys laying the wood.
The Marsh pick was also expected (the position, that is) but many thought that would come earlier. The fact he’s only played the position for 2 years is concerning so I’d imagine we’re still going to look at available free agent CB’s.
So, who’s still out there that we could target in the 4th and/or 5th rounds? Well, we have 4 picks between the next 2 rounds so expect a linebacker or 2 and another lineman (OL or DL). I also think we’ll take a player that can double as a return specialist because I just don’t see them allowing Jackson to continue to be put at risk on punt returns.
Players we could target:
LB: Casey Mathews, Ross Homan, Lawrence Wilson, Mario Harvey
OL: Jason Pinkston, Chris Hairston, Brandon Fusco
DL: Bruce Miller, Sam Acho, Lawrence Guy, Terrell McClain, Greg Romeus
RS: Jeremy Kerley, Noel Devine
