Per Tim McManus of Philly Sports Daily, the Eagles are planning on bringing in Colorado CB Jimmy Smith for a private workout. To my knowledge, he is the first top prospect that the Eagles are having a more extensive meeting with. Unlike other players they have met with recently, Smith could actually be a 1st round draft pick and be available at the #23 spot. Some mock drafts, including my own, have us taking the 6′ 2″, 205 lbs cornerback with our 1st pick.
However, this could be viewed as a bad sign for those who hope we do draft him. Why do I say that? Well, the Eagles typcially bring in prospects for 2 reasons: 1 is to learn a little more about the player and get a 1st hand look at him, the other reason is to build a “smoke screen”. That is, make other teams think they’re interested in that player while all along keeping their true target hidden. These are the types of games teams play leading up to the draft. If a team makes their intentions known they could lose leverage in a possible trade scenario or lose out on the player to another team.
If you’ve ever taken notice, the Eagles don’t usually draft players in the 1st round that they actually brought in for a visit. For example, last year they brought in players that were 1st round prospects including CB Kyle Wilson, S Eric Berry, DT Brian Price, DE Jerry Hughes, and OT Brian Bulaga. Many mock drafts had the Eagles taking Wilson in the 1st round and it seemed like a logical pick but as we know, that wasn’t the case. They never made any mention of Brandon Graham yet they wanted him badly enough to trade up for him. The same scenario can be said for our other 1st round picks such as Jeremy Maclin, Brodrick Bunkley, and Mike Patterson.
Andy Reid are co. are master strategists and always keep their true intentions close to the vest. Chances are that when the Eagles pick at #23, it won’t be anyone they brought in for a private visit…or showed any public interest in. So, if you are rooting for the Eagles to pick OT Gabe Carimi or some other prospect you covet, you should hope that they do not bring him into Philly!
